The bombs in Afghanistan have landed in Norway

A decade of Islamophobia to justify the war in Afghanistan is now spreading violence to the West. Right-wing Islamophobe Anders Behring Breivik has killed (at least) 77 people in Norway, through the explosion of a bomb near the Prime Minister’s building and a shooting spree in a youth camp organized by the Workers’ Youth League, the youth wing of Norway’s Labour Party.

Stop Harper!

“We have to stop him from wasting billions on fighter jets, military bases, and corporate tax cuts while cutting social programs and destroying the climate. Most people in this country know what we need are green jobs, better medicare, and a healthy environment for future generations,” said Brigette DePape, former senate page after her silent protest against Prime Minister Stephen Harper. DePape’s dissension struck a chord with millions of Canadians and exposes the Harper government where it’s weakest. The next several months will be critical in the fight against Harper’s austerity agenda as set out in the recent budget.

In the first major battle against the Harper majority government, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW, representing 50,000 workers across Canada and Quebec) have gone on strike. CUPW members voted almost 95 per cent in favour of strike action.

Harper can be stopped: Take the surge to the streets

The wave of resistance against the economic crisis has swept from Egypt to Wisconsin, and now to Canada. The historic collapse of the Liberals has reconfigured a smaller corporate vote around a Harper majority, while an NDP surge nearly tripled the seats for Canada’s only labour party. To continue the “orange wave” we need to take the surge to the streets to confront Harper’s agenda of austerity, ecological destruction and war.
