What’s wrong with relying on elections?

Parliamentary elections seem like the perfect way to change things. Everyone gets a vote and you can vote for who ever you like. And yet, despite the hard work of good people, the results are often disappointing. As we head into an election here in BC, we can look back on the track record of the NDP who were elected to replace the Liberals. The NDP has pushed through the Liberals’ major projects, Site C, LNG pipelines and terminals. They have also abandoned their opposition to the trans-mountain pipeline. On top of that the NDP sent the RCMP into Wetʼsuwetʼen land and refused to back down in the face of nation-wide protests.

How can revolutionary leftists use elections to their advantage? We know that change for the better is possible. And we know that it happens when people organize in their workplaces and communities to fight for the world we need. During elections when people are paying attention to politics and joining campaigns, it’s a great time to for socialists to bring more people into the discussion of the nature of elections under capitalism, the options for winning real gains now, and ultimately, the possibility of defeating capitalism as a whole.
