Saudi Arabia: pro-democracy activist Al-Bajadi is released

By:
Yusur Al Bahrani

August 6, 2013

Mohamed Al-Bajadi, who last year was unfairly setenced to five years jail in Saudi Arabia, was released on August 5.

Al-Bajadi, a founding member of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPPRA), is a prominent activist from Qassim, Saudi Arabia. Prior to his arrest, he was continuously and bravely defending all political detainees in Saudi prisons. He is well known to have said, “All political prisoners are my family members.” During the secret trial, Al-Bajadi refused to recognize the legitimacy of the court. Al-Bajadi was detained since March 21, 2011, and went on hunger strike.

According to activists, people's signatures and calls to release Al-Bajadi put pressure on the Saudi authorities.
