The never-ending wars, poverty and environmental destruction wrought by capitalism are increasing the appeal of revolutionary ideas. But there are many ideas and strategies on offer.
Many are looking to Stalinism and the current and former communist states as a model for change. But Stalinism represents a decisive break from the idea of the self emancipation of the working class. The ‘socialism from above’ that we saw in the former eastern block and in states like China will not bring about the kind of lasting change required to create a system of peace and equality.
