6:30PM PST - Wednesday March 5
The threat of a trade war with US threatens workers in both countries. The affordability crisis would worsen and many would lose their jobs on both sides of the border. Provincial and federal governments are planning to subsidize corporations here, lower corporate taxes, remove environmental regulations on resource projects, and massively increase spending on the border and arms.
More spending on police and border guards will only add to the anti-immigrant racism that the federal government is promoting with plans for deportations and cuts to worker and student visas.
The workers’ response to tariffs should never be to support counter tariffs. We call for unity of the working class on both sides of the border against the same billionaires that are driving down living standards for their own profit. We do not support any retaliatory measures from Canada that would hurt workers in Buffalo or Detroit or Seattle. As old union slogan goes, “an injury to one is an injury to all!”
We reject any nationalism or chauvinism in support of either state. The only path to liberation is the overthrow of the landlords and the capitalists and the governments that support them on both sides of the border.
We need to call for Land Back, Indigenous sovereignty and Socialism. For the unity of First Nations and the working class—against borders and capitalism—for the protection of the natural world and for liberation for all on Turtle Island.
Join us for a discussion of how to build opposition to the trade war and the attacks on migrant rights.
