On May 16, “Stand United Canada” has called for a slow-roll convoy to the national borders.
It’s no accident that May 16 is the date of UK Tommy Robinson’s “Unite the Kingdom” rally. British fascists are using Nakba Day, a massive day in Palestinian solidarity, to try and build up anti-refugee sentiment.
In yet another attempt of the growing far-right movement in Canada to lock into a global tide of white supremacist organizing, they are looking for strength through internationalism while simultaneously doubling-down on racist rhetoric.
“Stand United Canada” has been careful in their AI-slop messaging. They avoid overtly racist language on their website and calls to action. They speak about wanting to hold the government accountable, standing together and protecting Canada for future generations to hide their true intentions. They call out anti-Semitism and are silent on all other prejudices.
Make no mistake, they are firmly aligned with other white nationalist groups and do not shy aware from fascist underpinnings of xenophobic and racist hatred at their rallies and events. They say they are for “responsible” migration and are against “mass immigration”.
Pierre Poilievre made his keynote presentation to last weekend’s annual “Canada Strong and Free Networking Conference” in Ottawa. Joined alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith (fresh off her stellar violation of the Canada Health Act) and MAGA sweetheart Mike Pompeo (last-minute withdraw from bedfellow Pete Hoekstra), the electoral far-right filled their boots to discuss winning strategies for Canadian Conservatives in the nation’s capital.
In southwestern Ontario, they’ve called for a meet up in London, a city which currently holds the national record for unemployment at 9.2%, has recently had scandals in hospital financial misappropriation, and has an ineffectual municipal council that is doing nothing meaningful to address the housing and homelessness crisis. People have a reason to be angry and a group like “Stand United Canada” and their allies count on the disaffectedness of the working class, lumpen, and growing desperation of the middle-class petty bourgeoisie.
It is essential our workers’ movement continue to build a unified campaign that countermobilizes against the rising forces of fascism. We must continue to organize in our communities to build the power of a multi-racial working class that confronts anti-immigrant scapegoating from our state and white nationalist groups harnessing hatred.
In London, alongside the London & District Labour Council, the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada, and Forest City Solidarity, the International Socialists have called for a community counter-rally to this convoy meet-up.
