On June 6th, 2013 the British government expressed "sincere regret" for its extreme brutality toward Kenyans suspected of being in the Mau Mau anti-colonial movement of the 1950s. Along with this apology, the British government announced payments of £2,600 to each of 5,200 vetted claimants. This historic legal precedent has inspired 15 Caribbean nations to seek legal redress for the transatlantic slave trade.
Under the banner of CARICOM, 15 Caribbean nations have laid out a 10 point case that lays bare the legacy of slavery and its effect on the region. They are asking for a formal apology and reparations. A victory on any of the 10 points would open the door for other survivors of colonialism to launch a legal challenge of their own.
This Sunday join the Toronto West International Socialists as we explore the relationship between Capitalism and Slavery -- and make the case for reparations.
Come by any time between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Dinner: 5:15 pm. Talk: 6:15 pm.
