The Harper government is promoting anti-Muslim bigotry at every turn in its efforts to boost support for war in the Middle East and repression at home. Harper says that the greatest threat to Canada is "islamicism", that Muslim culture as 'anti-women' and his government scapegoats women who wear the niqab. This is in the context of Canada bombing Iraq and Syria, and of Harper trying to whip up the Conservative base in the lead-up to the October federal election.
Yet it is the Harper government that represents the greatest threat to Canada, pursuing policies that are driving us to catastrophic climate change and that only benefit the 1%. It is the Harper government that is a bastion of ‘anti-women’ policies, from refusing to institute an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women, to attacks on abortion and cuts to funding for programs promoting women’s equality.
How is anti-Muslim racism connected to Canada's drive to war and the attacks on dissent at home? How do we organize to challenge war, racism and attacks on civil liberties? What lessons can we learn from the mass movement that forced the Chrétien government to say no to the 2003 Iraq invasion?
