Fragments of a Past (2012), by Uma Chakravarti, recounts the life of Mythily Sivaraman, a political and social activist from Tamil Nadu. Mythily studied in the U.S. and had a promising career at the United Nations. But her life was transformed with the Kilvenmani incident of 1968, when an entire village of Dalit agricultural labourers was burnt down by upper caste landlords. From then on, Mythily dedicated herself to campaigning against the atrocities of caste and more. It was this incident that made her a communist, when she discovered that the victims of the massacre were in fact political activists linked to the Communist Party. In the end, these events made Mythily a leader of organized labour and working women's organizations, as well as an opponent of the caste system.
Fragments of a Past follows the journey to recover the events that led to Mythily's political transformation, as she struggles with her own memory loss.
"In Kilvenmani the film finds the kernel of Mythily’s life, and in that landscape of sacrifice and pathos comes alive the portrait of a woman who dared to dream revolution." – Meena T. Pillai
